Black Diamonds Black diamonds typically refers to diamonds that have a black color due to inclusion. Because of the associated mythology of the color black, these diamonds have had a rather negative history in the traditions and beliefs of various civilizations. For instance in India people believed that this unique form of diamond was cursed and symbolized the black eyes of snakes and spiders. However other cultures saw black diamonds in a more positive light. In Italy it was once believed that these gemstones could mend a relationship that was experiencing difficulties or that was even on the verge of separating or divorcing. Simply by touching a black diamond it was believed that the stone would absorb all of the negative feelings and anxieties in the relationship, thus freeing the couple from these negative emotions and allowing them to re-build their relationship and start afresh. The world’s largest black diamond, the Karloff Noir, is 88 carats and it is said that it bestows good fortune and happiness on anyone who touches it. Black diamonds are notoriously difficult for gemologists to cut and polish but an expertly cut natural black diamond is a thing of incredible beauty. In 1996, the Swiss firm de Grisogono introduced a stunning range of black diamond jewelry which was so well received it has since been credited with creating a new appreciation for this wonderful gemstone.
